solo_exbibitionDr Choong Kam Kow has, over the years, developed a distinct style and visual language of his own by fusing Eastern and Western aesthetic into his works. He loaves to works. He loves to works in series and each series allows him to innovate and expand his visual and each series allows his to innovate and expand his visual vocabulary aesthetic messages. For him, change is taken as an evolving process where culture, philosophy, innovation, environment, handling and manipulative skill are seriously pursued. The change or evolution of Choong is manifested in a series of series.

Gongfu Series (2005-)

Gongfu Series (2005-)

Choong suffered from colon cancer and underwent a major operation in mid 2005. After the operation, he took up Qi Gong and Tai Ji to help recuperate himself.

The Gongfu Series is developed from his experience of GongFu practice for health purpose. He captured the motion and stance of GongFu to suggest the mainpulation and control of Qi in his works. The background is still silk-screened with text of old almanac calendar as it also related to GongFu learning.

This series of works reflects certain facets of lifestyle of Malaysian Chinese in modern time.

In response to the environment conservation campaign, Choong and a group of artists made an expection into the tropical ferest of Endou Rmpin in 1985 as and attempt to have a better understanding of natural heritage.  In the forest, he realized and was enlightened by the growing and ageing process of nature. And through observing the relationship between the lingzhi (a kind of mushroom) and dead wood trunk, he discovered the cycle of the liffe nature.
