heading return to traditional value

1970's saw institutions, art historians and artists actively engaged in conference and seminar discussions with an aim to discover ways and means as how the Malaysian identity in art can be developed. Focus was very much placed on indigenous and ethnic cultural roots and elements. Dr Choong was very much impacted and inspired by this movement and thoughts. Consequently, he departed from dealing with international modernism and return to his own land to search for local identity. Subsequently, the notions of cultural identity and local elements were discovered, transformed and expressed in his Festival series.
