1970's saw institutions, art historians and artists actively engaged in conference and seminar discussions with an aim to discover ways and means as how the Malaysian identity in art can be developed. Focus was very much placed on indigenous and ethnic cultural roots and elements. Dr Choong was very much impacted and inspired by this movement and thoughts. Consequently, he departed from dealing with international modernism and return to his own land to search for local identity. Subsequently, the notions of cultural identity and local elements were discovered, transformed and expressed in his Festival series. |

1970 年代是马来西亚艺术界审视取代创作方向的年代。多次的艺术研讨会不断针对马来西亚的文化艺术身份的建设进行讨论和探索,有关机构,美术史家和画家都把焦点放在本土文化的探索和研究上,也相应提出建议和鼓励画家尝试去探索,研究和利用本土造型,内涵和传统元素去塑造马来西亚的艺术形象和身份。这种艺术的思维潮流,给了锺博士极大的冲击,于是他把创作的重点从全球性的概念视觉艺术布局转移到对本土的传统造型和视觉元素的探讨和研究。 1970 年中期,他发现了华族和马来族的传统编织结构和糕点造型的视觉元素以及它们在节庆中所扮演的角色的意义和意义,因而创作了以糕点造型为主的作品,充分地反映了本土的传统价值和元素。 |
