During the his stay in New York in the 1960’s, Dr Choong was directly exposed to, and influenced by the various contemporary art movements especially the Geometric Abstraction and Minimalism. He has since produced the New York, Shaped Canvas and the SEA Thru series in late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Though there were influences from the Constructivism, Geometric Abstraction and Minimalism, these series do strongly reflect the relevant local contents of the time. For example, assembling small canvases to form larger shaped canvases was an conceptual approach to reflect the notion of assembly system in the factory when Malaysia was actively engaged in contract manufacture for advanced country in the 1060’s and 1970’s. In his SEA Thru series, he combined visual, physical, pigment colour and light colour to interpret the ancient thought of Yijing and Daoism. Such avant-garde approaches have in fact influenced the creative thinking of Malaysian contemporary art a great deal. | ||||
