The New York Series encompasses the period 1965 to 1969. It was an attempts to reflect Dr Choong's rustic Asian reaction towards the Western metropolitan world, in his case from rural Perak to the city of New York to face cultural shock and the new comer's bewildered syndrome. The organic-cum-geometric visual canvases he did then reflect the tension I experienced in the fast and hectic world of New York. He combined hard-edged shapes with impasto patches of textured areas embedded with sand pebbles in my oil compositions. |
