heading the shaped canvas series

It was intended to mirror the industrial beauty.

The Shaped Canvas series covers the year 1968 to 1972. The efforts represent Dr Choong's response to the call of science and technology in the nation in search of progress and development at that time. The idea to join several small canvases to form the shaped canvases is to symbolize the notion of assembly system in the then contract manufacture industry in the 1960's and 1970's in Malaysia. The hard-edged configurations also mirror the notion of precision beauty in industry. For this reason, the gestural marks and strokes were deliberately eliminated. Instead, clean surface, complimentary colours and geometric shapes were employed to create optical illusion which gave an exciting visual phenomenal.

The notion of "colour is shape and shape is colour" was deftly pursued.
