heading the shaped canvas series

In this series, he treated colour as shape and shape as colour to mirror the industrial system and beauty. The Shaped Canvas Series covers the year 1968 to 1972, the efforts represent his response to the call of science and technology in the nation in search of progress and development at that time. The hard-edged configurations were intended to mirror the industrial beauty of order and precision. He used small square and rectangular canvases to form larger shaped canvases. Such art–making process resembles the assembly system in the assembly plant where industrial products are made. The domimnent shapes of squares and rectangles found in this series of works were derived from the notions that most product packaging were actually based on the foundermental form of squares and rectangles. In order to reflect the characteristic of technologal products, gestural marks were deliberately eliminated. Formalistically, complimentary colours were well exploited to create optical illusion and reversible forms. The manipulation of ‘colour is shape and shape is colour’ was deftly pursued in his attempt to reflect the notion of industrial system and beauty.
